League Directory
Last updated: June 9, 2006 Welcome to the directory of leagues that are using Diamond Mind Baseball. This page organizes the leagues into three basic categories -- licensed commercial leagues, leagues in which each manager plays games using his or her own copy of the game and season disk ("hands-on"), and leagues where all of the games are played on the commissioner's computer under the control of the computer manager ("centralized"). Within each category, the leagues are listed in alphabetical order, and each listing indicates whether the league currently has openings for new managers. With so many leagues operating, we need your help to keep this directory up to date. A listing might indicate that there are openings, but it's quite possible that the openings have been filled and the league contact forgot to tell us that. Some leagues may have folded. And others may have changed some of the information shown here. If you run a league, or if you know of any information in this listing that is out of date, please let us know right away. About once a week or so, we'll post any changes that are brought to our attention. Red text indicates recent additions or changes. This page also includes some important information about copyright laws and how they apply to the different types of leagues. Whether you're a league commissioner or league member, please help us make sure that our copyrights are not being violated through unauthorized distribution of games and seasons disks to league members. Licensed Commercial LeaguesThree companies have entered into commercial licensing agreements with Diamond Mind that permit them to run simulation-based leagues using the Diamond Mind baseball game and/or player ratings. Games are played on the computers owned by the company using rosters and manager profiles submitted by the managers who have joined their leagues.
The following paragraphs provide a brief summary of these games, and we invite you to follow the links to learn more about them. In 1992, STATS LLC introduced a game designed jointly by Bill James, STATS, and Diamond Mind. At that time, gamers could participate online, by phone, and through the mail. In 1999, this product was renamed Diamond Legends and relaunched as a web-based game. In 2006, Simnasium launched a new web-based game called Total Baseball that was designed jointly with Diamond Mind and uses a custom version of the DMB game engine and player ratings developed by Diamond Mind. In 1997, The Sports Attic entered into a licensing arrangement that allows them to operate a limited number of centralized leagues using the standard DMB game and season disks. Hands-on LeaguesThese leagues give you the opportunity to be intimately involved in running a baseball team. You participate in annual drafts of rookies and free agents. You call the shots on trades. You decide which players are on your active roster, which ones are down on the farm, and who to call up when someone gets hurt or goes into a big-time slump. And you choose the starting lineups and make all of the tactical decisions for at least some of the games as your season progresses. The common denominator for these leagues is that managers make their own roster moves and play at least some of the games on their own computers using their own copies of Diamond Mind Baseball and the season disk being used for the league. In most of these leagues, you play all of your home games while the computer manager handles your team (according to the manager profile you submit) when its on the road. In some leagues, you'll play the road games instead, and some leagues encourage you to play head-to-head over the internet using NetMeeting. Statistics, rosters, and manager profiles are exchanged at various intervals during the season using the transfer features built into the game.
Centralized LeaguesIn these leagues, all games are played on the commissioner's computer. League members receive printed reports (or text files) with information on rosters, game results, and statistics. All roster moves (drafts, trades, minor-league moves) and manager profile updates are made by the commissioner according to the instructions of league members. As a result, league members are not required to be owners of the Diamond Mind Baseball game or the related season disks, and the league commissioner does not have the legal right to distribute the game or the league disk to league members.
